A Halloween Elopement in Park City, Utah — Proof There Are No Rules For Your Big Day

By Utah Wedding and Engagement Photographer Carl James

On Halloween night in Park City, Utah, two people decided to do exactly what they wanted on their wedding day—and nothing else.

No ballroom.

No rigid timeline.

No traditions they didn’t believe in.

Instead, they became Frankenstein and his Bride, stood in the mountains under the cold October air, and said their vows surrounded by intention, creativity, and authenticity.

And honestly? It was incredible!

The Elopement: Mountains and Meaning

Their ceremony was simple and deeply personal. Tucked away in the mountains outside Park City, the couple exchanged vows with her brother officiating—other than a couple of witnesses there was no audience, no pressure, no performance.

Just them. (And me.)

That’s the beauty of an elopement: when you remove expectations, what’s left is just the meaning behind it all.

The quiet moments, and just being together.

Frankenstein, The Bride, and DIY Magic

Every detail of this elopement was hands-on and intentional.

  • They did their own makeup (and despite offering to help, they did an incredible job without me! Lol)
  • Her sister-in-law handmade the wig
  • The costumes were perfectly executed

This is true art, y'all.

This is one of the most powerful, cinematic, and completely unforgettable elopements I've ever done, and will ever do.

From the Mountains to an Abandoned Warehouse/Mill

After the ceremony, we hiked up to an abandoned mill with concrete walls, broken windows, dust, and who knows what else lying about. The perfect spot for a shoot like this! I brought along atmosphere spray to add texture and movement, and it was insane. The light, the smoke, the costumes—it all came together in a way that felt straight out of a film.

These are more that wedding photos, these tell a STORY. And the final images? Absolutely INSANE. Even if I do say so myself. ;)

Your Wedding Doesn’t Need Permission

Here’s the truth I want every couple to hear:

You do not need to follow rules that don’t resonate with you.

You do not owe anyone a traditional wedding.

You do not have to play it safe.

If you want to elope on Halloween—do it.

If you want costumes—wear them.

If you want warehouses, the streets, a parking garage, or something completely else untraditional—go there.

The best weddings I photograph are the ones where couples stop asking, “Is this allowed?” and start asking, “Does this feel like us?”

This Is the Kind of Wedding Photography I Love

I don’t just document weddings—I collaborate with couples who want something different.

Something bold.

Something intentional.

Something unapologetically theirs.

If you have a wild idea, a quiet vision, or something you’re not sure anyone else would understand… that’s exactly what excites me.

Your wedding should feel like freedom, not obligation.

And if you’re ready to create something unforgettable—

I’m in. :)
