How to Prepare for a Male Boudoir Shoot
BY UTAH MALE BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHER CARL JAMES
Male boudoir is about confidence, presence, and authenticity—not perfection. Whether this is your first professional photoshoot or you’re stepping into boudoir for the first time, preparation should help you feel comfortable, relaxed, and fully yourself. Here’s how to show up ready for your session without overthinking it.
Get to Know Your Photographer
Comfort is everything in male boudoir.
That’s why I always book a planning session before your shoot. This gives us time to get to know each other, talk through your comfort level, and clarify what you want out of the experience. Most men start their session saying things like, “I’m awkward in front of the camera,” or “I’ve never done anything like this.” That’s normal—and exactly why connection matters.
During our planning session, we’ll:
- Talk through boundaries and comfort levels
- Discuss the overall vibe of your shoot (subtle, bold, artistic, masculine, soft, or edgy)
- Plan wardrobe options that work for your body type and personality
When you trust the person behind the camera, everything changes. You don’t have to “perform”—you just show up, and I guide you through the rest.
What to Wear
Male boudoir wardrobe is simple, intentional, and flexible. Less is more—but the right pieces make all the difference.
Popular options include:
- A suit or blazer – perfect for an undress-style boudoir session where we start fully dressed and slowly peel layers away
- Jeans and a button-up – timeless, masculine, and effortless - undress style here again.
- Boxers or boxer briefs – clean, fitted, and flattering
- Jockstraps or underwear – bold, confident, and optional depending on your comfort level
- Hats and accessories – watches, rings, chains, or boots can elevate the look
- Nothing at all - whether this means we use a sheet or a cloth, or take some tasteful nudes, there's no need to overthink an outfit!
Bring a few options. We’ll choose what photographs best in the moment. Fit matters more than brand—clean lines and confidence always win.
Self-Care Matters
You don’t need a full makeover, but a little self-care goes a long way in how you feel and how you photograph.
Before your session:
- Skincare: Keep it simple—cleanse and moisturize so your skin looks healthy and hydrated
- Shaving or grooming: Whether you shave, trim, or keep your beard, do it intentionally a day or two before your shoot
- Haircut: A fresh cut a few days prior helps everything settle naturally
Fuel your body: A high-protein, low-carb breakfast helps reduce bloating and keeps your energy steady. If you can, avoid sugars and alcohol the days prior to your shoot too, this will help with overall inflammation too.
This isn’t about changing your body—it’s about showing up feeling taken care of.
And Don’t Stress
You do not need to know how to pose.
You do not need to look like a model.
You do not need to have confidence figured out before you arrive.
That’s my job.
I’ll guide you through every pose, every movement, and every expression. Male boudoir is built on direction, subtle shifts, and trust—not forced confidence. Most men leave their session surprised by how comfortable it felt and how powerful they look in their final images.
Show up as you are. I’ll take care of the rest.
