Vulnerability is a catch phrase and I hate it... But there's a reason for it.
A lot of men avoid vulnerability because it was never taught or modeled for us in society or otherwise- and it's the one reason your headshots or portraits quite frankly, suck.
Hear me out.
Being photographed is one of the most vulnerable things you can do, when you work with the right photographer. And that's a beautiful thing.
As men, we’re taught to be the biggest, strongest, toughest, etc.
To provide.
To endure.
To hold it together at all times- but rarely are we taught to be seen.
The Problem With “Just a Photo”
Your standard run of the mill "photos" don't inspire.
Portraits and works of art do. And do you want to blend in with the crowd? Or do you want to lead and inspire?
When my male clients are willing to let their guard down, even slightly, it makes all the difference.
When you are able to open up, that shows in the camera. The end result is half you - half me. Because that openness shows up in the portrait in more ways than you realize and it makes a huge difference in the overall feel and impact the photograph can make.
Why Vulnerability Is the Real Strength
Vulnerability doesn’t necessarily mean crying.
It doesn’t mean oversharing.
It doesn’t mean weakness.
It means being present.
It means allowing yourself to drop the performance for a few minutes.
It means not hiding behind the “I’m fine” mask.
The most powerful portraits I’ve ever created happened when people stop trying to be a certain way and they allow themselves to just be real.
Then the images inspire.
They become transformational — not just for you, but for anyone who sees them.
And when that honesty shows up in front of the lens, the camera captures more than appearance — it captures identity.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
Your kids will look at these portraits one day.
Your partner sees a side of you in them that maybe you don’t show every day.
Your future self will see proof of who you were — not just what you did.
And maybe most importantly…
You will see yourself differently.
Not as the critic.
Not as the aging version.
Not as the man carrying the weight of everything.
But as someone steady.
Capable.
Worthy of being seen.
