YOUR BRANDING SUCKS-AND HOW TO FIX IT
by Carl James | Utah Headshot, Branding, and Boudoir Photographer
Hard to hear I know, but chances are… it’s true.
Now before you get offended, hear me out.
If you’ve been in the business or entrepreneurial world for more than five minutes, you’ve probably been beat over the head with words like branding, authenticity, storytelling, and those cringe phrases like “show up as your true self.”
But seriously—what does that even mean?
So, if you have the funds, you hire a marketing agency, but when that doesn't work, or at least you realize it doesn't fully resonate, you Google it. You watch YouTube videos. You read books about marketing and personal branding. You try your best to figure out how to look like you’ve got it all together while still being “real.” And if you’re anything like me, you end up overwhelmed, questioning everything, and still somehow feeling like you’re missing the mark.
Here’s the thing no one tells you:
Your branding sucks…
But it isn't for the reason you think.
It sucks because you’re not being honest with yourself.
We all want the shiny logo, the dreamy brand photos, the “aligned” messaging—but none of that matters if you’re disconnected from you. And no one can tell you how to find that connection. You’ve gotta go get quiet with yourself. Sit in the discomfort. Ask the hard questions. Not just the fluffy “what’s my passion?” kind of questions—but the ones that make your stomach twist.
That realization hit me hard a few years ago.
I was working with an energy healer in 2020, and she asked me to say:
“I’m afraid of failure.”
I said it. Nothing. It didn’t resonate. I’ve failed a million times—I could do that in my sleep.
Then she asked me to say:
“I’m afraid of success.”
And I couldn’t even get the words out. My throat locked up. Tears instantly began to well.
That was it. That was the truth. That was the thing holding me back.
I had become addicted to my own struggle story. Subconsciously, I was clinging to the version of me that people felt sorry for—because that’s where I felt seen. I had done the therapy, the journaling, the work... but there was still a part of me using my pain as a reason to stay small.
So why am I telling you this in an article about branding?
Because your brand is you. If you don’t know yourself—if you’re hiding from your own potential—your audience will feel it. And no amount of Canva templates or aesthetic photos will fix that. They will definitely help, but won't quite "hit".
I used to ask myself all the typical branding questions:
What’s my niche? Who’s my ideal client? What’s my story?
But without even knowing, I was building a brand on half-truths. Not lies—just incomplete layers of who I really was. And even though I created something decent, I knew it wasn’t the whole picture.
Branding is an evolution. As you deepen your self-awareness, your brand deepens too. And the more real you become with yourself, the more powerful your brand becomes for the people who need it.
Because here’s the truth:
“People can only meet you as deeply as they’ve met themselves.”
—Matt Kahn
And likewise, you can only connect with your audience to the level that you’ve connected with yourself.
So if your branding sucks?
It’s probably because your self-awareness does too.
But the good news? You can change that.
Put down the marketing books for a second. Step away from the Pinterest boards. And ask yourself the real questions. The ones that make you squirm a little. I created a whole list at the end of this article for that exact reason—because your brand doesn’t start with colors and fonts. It starts with truth. Your truth.
And once you know that?
Then you can start figuring out who your people are—your dream clients, your audience, your community. You’ll know where they are, how they think, what they need, and how you are uniquely equipped to serve them. Because you’re no longer pretending.
You’re just being you.
And when you’re ready to translate that realness into visuals, messaging, and content that actually feels like you, that’s where I come in. Not to “fix” your brand—but to reflect you back at you in the most honest and beautiful way possible. Whether it's headshots, a full branding shoot, or just someone to sit with you while you figure it all out—I’m here for that.
Because no one wants a perfect brand anymore. We want real. We want connection.
We want someone we can see ourselves in.
So if you're ready to show up fully—messy, radiant, whole—you already know what to do.
Let’s create something that doesn’t suck.
Let’s create something true.

CLARITY & NEXT STEPS

25. What is one truth I’ve been avoiding?
DEEPER SOUL WORK
- What belief about myself am I ready to let go of?
- When was the last time I felt truly seen? What made that possible?
- What would my inner child be proud of? What would they be asking for now?
- What part of myself have I outgrown but keep holding onto out of habit?
